The Story of the Borrowers Afield
The story begins with Kate and Mrs. May looking at an old cottage. They meet Tom Goodenough, the cottage's tenant. Tom knows Arrietty Clock, a tiny Borrower. Mrs. May's brother also knows her.
The Clocks' New Home
Tom tells them about Arrietty and her family. The Clock family had to leave their home in a big English house. They couldn't find their relatives. So, they ended up living in an old boot!
Life in the Wild
Life outdoors is very dangerous for the tiny Borrowers. Cows, moths, and even field mice are huge threats. The cold weather also makes survival hard. But the Clocks learn how to live in the wild.
New Friends and Dangers
A mysterious wild Borrower named Spiller helps them. He brings them meat to eat. Spiller even saves Arrietty from a scary dog attack. One night, a gypsy named Mild Eye finds his lost boot. He takes the Clock family back to his caravan.
