The Breakwater is a special old building in central Maine. It sits on the Mount Kineo peninsula, right by Moosehead Lake. Built in 1909, it was once a fancy lodge where people stayed for sports and fun. This building shows off cool architectural styles like Shingle style and Italianate features. A famous architect from New York City, Howard G. Chamberlain, designed it. It was a very important part of the Mount Kineo Resort, a popular summer spot. Because of its history and design, The Breakwater was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2002.

What is The Breakwater?

The Breakwater is a two-story building made of wood. It stands on the southern tip of a thin piece of land. This land reaches out from Mount Kineo into Moosehead Lake. Moosehead Lake is the biggest lake in Maine.

What Does It Look Like?

The main part of the building has a shingled roof that slopes down on all sides. It sits on strong stone supports. There's also a smaller section with a different kind of roof. The front of the building faces the lake. It has a porch that goes up two stories. On each side of the porch, there are bays with many windows. A decorative band separates the first and second floors. This band curves nicely above the windows. There's also a dormer window on the roof above the porches.

The side of the building that faces west looks similar. The porch on the first floor has been closed in with glass. There's also a special eyebrow-shaped dormer window above the porches. The windows on the first floor have twelve small panes over one large pane. Upstairs, the windows have six small panes over one large pane. The railings on the porches have a cool diamond pattern made of wood.

A Look Inside

Inside, The Breakwater has a very open layout. The areas for staff and services are mostly in the smaller section of the building. There's a big living room in the middle. Dining rooms are on either side of this living room. Upstairs, the rooms are set up for people to live in, with bedrooms and bathrooms.

The Breakwater's Story Through Time

Howard G. Chamberlain, an architect from New York, designed The Breakwater. It was built in 1909. The nearby Mount Kineo Resort helped manage its construction. The Moosehead Yacht Club also provided some money. This club was a big social group in the lake community.

The Mount Kineo Resort was very popular for many years. But it faced tough times during the Great Depression. The main hotel building was taken down in 1938. What was left were an annex building, some small cottages, and The Breakwater. In 1946, all these parts came under one owner.

Later attempts to make the resort popular again didn't work out. The hotel annex was also taken down in 1995. The Yacht Club started up again in 1962, but it's now located in Greenville. The Breakwater was empty for many years. However, it was carefully fixed up and restored starting in 1999.
