The Candy Apple News Company was a fun children's television series made in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It first aired on February 2nd, 1979, on WCAU-TV Channel 10. The show was popular and was rerun for many years. Its last regular airing was on September 7th, 1991.

About The Candy Apple News Company

This TV show was set in an old-fashioned office in a small town. It was like a news company that shared interesting things for kids. These items would then be used on TV, radio, and in newspapers. The show combined human actors with friendly puppets.

Each episode of The Candy Apple News Company was an hour long. It was filled with many different parts. These included short funny skits and educational films. There were also other special pieces made just for the show.

Meet the Characters

The main human character was Matt Robinson. He played the Editor-in-Chief of the company. You might know Matt Robinson from Sesame Street, where he played a character named Gordon.

Matt was joined by his assistant, C.B., played by Mary Margaret Myers. The office also had a team of puppet friends:

  • Boris the bat worked as the book reviewer.
  • Morgan the mole was a researcher, helping find facts.
  • Alistair the cuckoo was the timekeeper, making sure things ran on schedule.

Other regular characters included a puppet named Sparks O'Sullivan. There was also a special talking radio from the 1930s. This old radio acted as the show's narrator, guiding viewers through the stories.

Behind the Scenes

The mole, bat, and cuckoo puppets were not new when The Candy Apple News Company started. They had been used a year earlier in another WCAU show. That show was a half-hour special called Yipe! Don't Be Afraid.

These amazing puppets were created by George Neff. He was the chairman of the art department at Glassboro State College in New Jersey.
