The Cat in the Hat Comes Back is a fun children's book from 1958. It was written and illustrated by the famous author Dr. Seuss and published by Random House. This book is a sequel, meaning it continues the story of The Cat in the Hat (1957).

In this adventure, the playful Cat in the Hat causes a big pink stain in the family's bathtub. The stain starts to spread all over the house as the children try to clean it up. To fix the problem, the Cat reveals many smaller cats hidden under his hat. The tiniest cat of all finally solves the messy situation!

The Story of the Pink Stain

Once again, Sally and her brother, Conrad, are home alone for the day. Their mother has asked them to clear a lot of snow while she is out. But their work is quickly stopped when the Cat in the Hat shows up.

Sally remembers what happened last time the Cat visited. She warns Conrad not to talk to him or let him come inside. However, the Cat lets himself into their house to get out of the snow. Conrad follows him inside.

When Conrad reaches the bathroom, he finds the Cat eating cake in the bathtub with the water running. Conrad gets annoyed and tells the Cat there is work to do. He says the Cat should not be eating cake like that. Conrad explains that the Cat can stay only if he helps them with the snow. If not, he needs to leave.

Conrad turns off the water and drains the tub. But then they see a long pink ring stuck around the bathtub's sides. The Cat offers to help clean it. But his first tries to remove the pink spot make things worse!

The Spreading Mess

The Cat accidentally moves the pink mess onto many other things. First, it gets on their mother's white dress. Then it spreads to the wall, their father's expensive shoes, a rug, and even their parents' bed.

The Cat isn't sure how to remove the stain from the bed. So, he calls for help from Little Cat A, who lives inside his hat. Little Cat A then lifts his hat to show Little Cat B. After that, Little Cat B reveals Little Cat C.

The three Little Cats start working. They move the stain to the television, then to a pan. Finally, they try to blow it outside with a fan.

The Tiny Cat's Solution

The pink spot now covers the snow outside. So, Little Cat C lifts his hat to show Little Cats D through G. These seven Little Cats try to fight the pink snow spots. They shoot at pink snowballs using pop guns. But this only spreads the spots even more!

So, Little Cat G lifts his hat to reveal Little Cats H through V. The harder all these cats work, the more the spot keeps spreading. Soon, all the snow is pink!

Finally, Little Cat V takes off his hat. He uncovers Little Cats W, X, Y, and the super tiny Little Cat Z. Little Cat Z takes off his hat and unleashes a "Voom." This "Voom" magically cleans up the spot completely! It also clears all the snow from the paths. Plus, it puts all the Little Cats back into the Big Cat's hat.

The Cat then leaves. He promises that he and the Little Cats, from A to Z, will return someday. They will come back if Sally and Conrad ever have problems like "snow spots" again.

The book ends with a fun poem. It lists all the little cats in a rhyming verse, reciting the alphabet.

Why No More Live-Action Movies?

After the movie version of the original story came out in 2003, there were plans for a sequel. This new movie would have been based on The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.

However, Theodore Geisel's wife, Audrey Geisel, decided something important. She chose not to allow any more live-action movies based on her husband's books. This means that for now, there won't be a live-action film of The Cat in the Hat Comes Back.
