The City of Lougheed is a huge shopping mall in Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada. It's the second-biggest mall in Burnaby! It has over 160 stores and places to eat, covering a space of about 615,000 square feet. This mall opened way back in 1969.
You can find it in the northeast part of Burnaby, close to the Coquitlam border. It's super easy to get to because it's right next to the Lougheed Town Centre station. This station is a major stop for SkyTrain trains, connecting the Expo Line and Millennium Line.
It used to be called Lougheed Town Centre or Lougheed Mall. Since 2018, this large 40-acre area has been changing into a new, modern community. This new plan includes building up to 23 apartment towers, adding 300 new shops and restaurants, and creating more than 5 acres of public parks and open spaces.
A Look at Lougheed's History
The mall, first known as Lougheed Mall, opened its doors on September 24, 1969. It started with popular stores like the Bay, Safeway, and Woolco. It was special because it was the very first Bay store to open inside a shopping mall.
Lougheed also had a movie theatre with three screens, run by Famous Players, from 1969 until 1991. After that, another company took it over for a while as a discount movie theatre, but it closed for good in 2002. The mall was made bigger in 1986 and updated in the early 2000s. The Bay store closed in December 2023.
The Big Transformation
The City of Burnaby has a special plan for the Lougheed Town Centre area. It's being turned into a new, lively community called The City of Lougheed. This project will bring 300 new shops and restaurants, 5 acres of public parks, and over 10,000 new homes.
Some older parts of the site were taken down to make room for the first new neighborhood. This part includes four apartment towers and new stores, planned to be finished in 2021. The old food court closed, and a new dining area called The Eateries opened in 2019. This was the start of the big change from Lougheed Town Centre to The City of Lougheed. More changes will happen in different stages over time. This huge project is being built by Shape Properties Corp.
Getting Around: Transportation
The City of Lougheed is very easy to reach by public transport. The main way is using the regional SkyTrain system. The closest stop is Lougheed Town Centre station. This station is important because it's where the Expo Line and Millennium Line trains meet. You can catch trains going to different parts of Metro Vancouver from here.
The mall also has a bus loop, which is a place where many bus routes start and end. These buses can take you to the Tri-Cities area, other parts of Burnaby, New Westminster, and even further places like Fraser Heights and Langley.
