How the Book Looked Over Time
The covers of The Clue in the Crumbling Wall changed over the years. Each new cover showed the story in a slightly different way.
The First Cover (1945)
The very first cover was drawn by R. H. Tandy. It shows Nancy, Bess, and George. They are pulling a box out of a wall. They found the box while hiding from two men. These men were trying to break into the stone walls of a garden path. On this cover, Bess has dark blonde hair. All three girls wear dresses. This is different from the book's text. In the story, they wear riding pants and casual shirts.
The Updated Cover (1962)
The cover art was changed in 1962. It showed the same scene as the first cover. Nancy, Bess, and George are still pulling out the box. But on this cover, all three girls are wearing dresses or skirts. Nancy's hair color was changed to a reddish-brown. The men are shown on the other side of the wall.
The Revised Edition Cover (1973)
The story itself was updated in 1973. A new cover was made for this edition. This cover showed a mix of different things. You could see Heath Castle, the men causing trouble, and a confused Nancy.
