Nancy Drew, along with her friends Bess and George, heads to Candleton. This is a pretty town by the sea. They are there to help Nancy's dad's client, Mrs. Chantrey. She lost money by buying fake investments.
On their way, they stop in Fisher's Cove. Bess buys some expensive "Mon Coeur" perfume there. The woman selling it seems a bit suspicious.
A Mysterious Bell and a Missing Dad
In Candleton, they meet Mrs. Chantrey at her restaurant, the Salsandee shop. Nancy and her friends even help out as waitresses! While working, Nancy meets a mysterious man named Amos Hendrick. He tells her he is looking for a lost Paul Revere bell.
When Amos leaves, Nancy finds a secret message he dropped. She gives it to Mrs. Chantrey to keep safe. Soon after, Nancy's dad, Carson Drew, doesn't show up as planned. Nancy gets worried. She finds out he has been kidnapped! Luckily, Nancy quickly rescues her father.
The Ghost of the Tolling Bell
Nancy also learns about a local legend. It's the story of Amy Maguire. She married Ferdinand Slocum, even though her parents didn't approve.
The people of Candleton tell Nancy about a cave. They say a ghost lives there. This ghost rings a bell whenever water rushes through the cave. Nancy decides to investigate. She explores the cave, which is right under the old Maguire house. During her search, rushing water sweeps her into the sea! Luckily, she is rescued.
Uncovering the Truth
Nancy soon discovers that Mrs. Chantrey isn't the only one. Many other people in Candleton also bought fake "Mon Coeur" investments. Nancy works hard to track down the perfume scammers.
She also uncovers the real story of Amy Maguire. Nancy solves the mystery of the "ghost" in the cave. With the help of the secret message, she finds the tolling bell. It turns out to be the valuable Paul Revere bell that Amos Hendrick was searching for!
