History of the College Club
Starting the Club in Boston
In December 1890, The College Club found its first home at 76 Marlborough Street in Boston. This building was bought by a club member named Mabel Cummings in 1893. The club's design was created by Mary Almy.
New Homes for the Club
In April 1905, the College Club moved to a new clubhouse at 40 Commonwealth Avenue. This building had a beautiful drawing room and seven bedrooms. Each bedroom was decorated with colors from different women's colleges. For example, one room had blue silk curtains for Wellesley College. Another had pink and gray for Vassar College.
In 1924, the Club bought its current home at 44 Commonwealth Avenue. This building was once the family home of Royal E. Robbins. He was an important person at the Waltham Watch Company. The building is a brownstone townhouse. It was built in 1864 and designed in a style called High Victorian.
Helping Students Go to College
In 1985, the College Club started something very important: The College Club Scholarship Fund, Inc. This fund is a charity that helps students. Since 1986, the Scholarship Fund has given money to high school seniors. These students come from Boston Public Schools and need help paying for college. Club members manage this fund.
