The Story of The Conscious Daughters
The group started making music in 1985. In 1993, they met the rapper Paris. They gave him a demo tape, which is like a sample of their music. Paris was impressed and signed them to his record label, Scarface Records. A record label helps musicians record and sell their music.
First Album and Big Break
After signing, The Conscious Daughters released their first studio album. It was called Ear to the Street and came out in 1993. A studio album is a collection of songs recorded in a professional studio.
Their song "Somethin' to Ride To (Fonky Expedition)" was released as a single in 1994. A single is one song released on its own. The music video for this song helped TCD become famous across the country. Soon after, they signed with a bigger label, Priority/EMI Records.
Second Album and TV Appearances
In 1996, they released their second album, Gamers. The group then worked with other artists on different projects. They also appeared on popular TV shows. These included Rap City, MTV Jams, and Soul Train. These shows helped them reach even more fans.
Later Years and New Music
In 2007, another famous rapper, Nas, released a song. It was called "Where Are They Now (West Coast Remix)." This song featured many West Coast hip hop artists, including TCD.
Their third album, The Nutcracker Suite, came out on February 10, 2009. It was released through Guerilla Funk Records. In 2010, TCD decided to leave Guerilla Funk Records. The next year, in 2011, they signed a new deal with Phaseone/Sony. This deal helped them get their music distributed more widely.
The End of an Era
Sadly, on December 10, 2011, Karryl "Special One" Smith passed away at her home. Her passing marked the end of The Conscious Daughters as an active group.
