She is the main editor and publisher of a well-known publication called The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter. Since 2015, she has also been a political expert for the PBS News Hour. Amy Walter grew up in a town called Barrington, Illinois. She finished Barrington High School in 1987. After high school, she went to Colby College. She graduated in 1991 with the highest honors, which is called summa cum laude. Today, she is part of the college's board of trustees, helping to guide the school.

Starting at The Cook Political Report
Amy Walter began working at The Cook Political Report in 1997. For ten years, until 2007, she was a senior editor there. Her job was to cover news about the United States House of Representatives. This meant she reported on what was happening with the politicians who make laws for the country.
Working at National Journal and ABC News
From 2007 to 2010, Amy Walter was the Editor-in-Chief at the National Journal's Hotline. This is another important news source about politics. In 2010, she moved to ABC News to be their political director. She worked there until 2013.
Returning to The Cook Political Report
In 2013, Amy Walter went back to The Cook Political Report. She became their national editor. On July 30, 2021, when the founder Charlie Cook left, Amy Walter became the new editor and publisher. The publication was then renamed The Cook Political Report with Amy Walter.
