The Demon's Lexicon is an exciting fantasy novel written by Sarah Rees Brennan, an author from Ireland. It first came out in 2009. This book is the first part of a series called The Demon Trilogy. The other books in the series are The Demon's Covenant (published in 2010) and The Demon's Surrender (published in 2011).
What's the Story About?
This book is about two brothers, Nick and Alan Ryves. They are always fighting against scary demons and monsters. They are also trying to escape from a powerful magician. Their mother supposedly took a special amulet from him.
While on the run, Nick and Alan meet Mae and Jamie. These two teenagers are also having problems and need help. As the story goes on, everyone faces dangerous creatures and people who want to harm them. Old secrets start to come out, making things even more complicated.
In this world, some people are born with magic powers. Others can make deals with demons to get special abilities. Mae wonders if she once had magic, but Nick tells her that true magic never really goes away.
Meet the Characters

- Nick Ryves - He doesn't like many people, except for his brother Alan. He finds it hard to understand why Alan would risk his life to help strangers.
- Alan Ryves - Nick's older brother. He has red hair and wears glasses. Alan has a leg injury and is smaller than Nick. Even though he's very good with guns, he is also kind. He always tries to help others, especially Mae and Jamie.
- Mae Crawford - Nick and Alan think she is a bit loud and annoying. She is Jamie Crawford's older sister. Mae has pink hair.
- Jamie Crawford - Mae's quiet brother. He is thin and looks nervous, but he is a kind person. He often makes jokes when he feels worried.
- Olivia - She is Nick and Alan's mother. Olivia is very fond of Alan but doesn't like Nick. She has some mental health challenges and always wears special charms and amulets.
- Merris Cromwell - A mysterious and wealthy leader of a place called the Goblin Market. She runs Mezentius House, which is like a hospital or prison for people whose bodies are taken over by demons.
- Sin - A dancer who works at the Goblin Market.
- Black Arthur - A powerful magician and the leader of a group called the Obsidian Circle. He is mean and wants more power than anything else.
- Gerald - Another magician who is part of the Obsidian Circle.
- Anzu - A demon that often looks like an eagle.
- Liannan - An icy demon, also known as a succubus. She believes that Nick is someone she loved in the past. In Japan, she is sometimes called "Yuki Onna."
When Was It Published?
The Demon's Lexicon was released around the world on June 1, 2009. However, people in Ireland could buy the book a little earlier. Stores like Eason's started selling it on May 29.
