The first edition of this encyclopedia was very popular. More than 75,000 copies were sold! It became one of the top five best-selling books in the long history of Yale University Press.
It also won many special honors:
- It won the 1995 New York Society Library Award. This award is for the best book about New York City.
- The American Library Association (in their Booklist) called it an outstanding reference book of 1995. The New York Public Library also gave it this honor.
- It received a special mention for the 1996 Dartmouth Medal.
- It was chosen by the History Book Club and the Reader's Subscription.
