Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Fall of Man, also known as Adam and Eve or Adam and Eve in the earthly paradise, is a famous painting created by the artist Rubens between 1628 and 1629. You can see this artwork today at the Prado museum in Madrid, Spain. For a while, people thought a different artist named Karel van Mander painted it. But now, experts agree it was definitely painted by Rubens.

The Story of the Painting

This painting shows a scene from the Bible called "The Fall of Man." It features Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden. They are about to eat, or have just eaten, the forbidden fruit. This act, often shown as an apple, is a key moment in the story.

How Rubens Got His Idea

Rubens created this painting by making a copy of another famous artwork. He copied a painting with the same subject by an artist named Titian. Rubens saw Titian's original painting when he visited Madrid. This visit happened between 1628 and 1629. Rubens was in Madrid for important talks to help end a big conflict called the Dutch Revolt.

Rubens's Unique Touch

Even though Rubens copied Titian's painting, he added his own style. Titian's work was influenced by the artist Raphael. Rubens, in turn, was influenced by Jan Brueghel the Elder. Rubens made some interesting changes in his copy. For example, he added a parrot to the scene. He also changed how Adam was standing. Rubens made Adam's muscles look different and changed his age and facial expression.
