Discovering The Fort's Unique Look
The Fort was built in 1877. It's a square-shaped house, meaning it looks the same from all sides. Each side has five sections, called bays, where windows or doors are usually placed.
What is The Fort Made Of?
The bottom part of the house, its foundation, is built from strong, cut stone called ashlar. The roof is a special type called a hip roof. It's covered with colorful, overlapping tiles, like fish scales, known as imbricated slates.
Why The Fort Stands Out
This house sits on top of a hill, so you can see it from far away in every direction. It has many cool design features from the Italianate style. These include a fancy decorative edge under the roof, called a cornice. There are also carved stone pieces above the windows and doors, called lintels. You can easily spot these details from a distance because the house is surrounded by open farmland, not trees.
Special Features of The House
The front of The Fort has porches on both sides. In the very middle of the front, there's a two-story bay window. This kind of window sticks out from the wall, making the room inside feel bigger. You can also see chimneys at the top of the side walls.
The Fort's Place in History
In 1982, The Fort was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important historical sites in the United States. It was chosen because its old architecture is very well-preserved. Experts say it's one of the best Italianate buildings in the countryside of Union County.
Home of a Famous Horse Breeder
The Fort is also important because it was once home to a famous horse breeder named Shepard Clark. His father was one of the first people to settle in Allen Township. Shepard Clark was highly respected all over Ohio for his work with horses.
