Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Game of Sunken Places is an exciting fantasy novel for children. It was written by M. T. Anderson and first came out in 2004. This book is the first part of a series called the Norumbegan Quartet. The story continues in The Suburb beyond the Stars (2010) and The Empire of Gut and Bone (2011).

What the Story Is About

The book tells the tale of two teenage boys, Brian and Gregory. They are good friends, even though they are very different from each other. They go to visit a big house in Vermont. This house belongs to Gregory's Uncle Max.

Meeting Uncle Max

Uncle Max is a very unusual person. He uses old-fashioned words and acts like a fancy person from a long time ago. He reminds them of an aristocrat from the Edwardian era.

The Mysterious Game Board

In the nursery of the mansion, Brian and Gregory find a special game board. It is the board for "The Game of Sunken Places." They accidentally start the game. They also meet Gregory's cousin, Prudance, who lives nearby.

An Ancient Conflict Begins

The boys and Prudance soon find themselves caught up in a very old conflict. This fight is between magical, supernatural beings. It's a ritual that has been happening for ages.

Playing the Game in the Woods

Once they go into the woods, the game truly begins. They meet surprising friends, like Kalgrash the troll. Together, they work to complete all the challenges. The game board helps them by acting as a map.

The Final Challenge

In the last challenge, Gregory is close to winning. At the same time, Brian is in danger from someone named Jack Stimple. The boys thought Jack was their opponent. But they almost fell into his trap. Jack was not playing the game at all.

Gregory was actually playing for the Thusser Hordes and was about to win. Brian stopped him just in time. Meanwhile, monks took Jack Stimple away for hurting Brian. Gregory trusts Brian and lets him win the game. This meant another battle was won for the Norumbegans. It turns out that Prudance was the one who first thought of "The Game of Sunken Places."
