What is The Gate Building?
The Gate is a new office tower located at 1 Eyre Street in Sheffield, England. It is currently under construction. The building has reached its full height, which is called "topping out." This means the main structure is complete.
How The Project Started
Plans for The Gate were first made in 2006. Building work began in 2007. However, the project had to stop in 2009. This was because of a big economic problem called the Great Recession. Many building projects paused during this time.
Building work on The Gate started again in 2017. The building reached its full height in 2019. It is expected to be completely finished by the summer of 2020.
The Gate's Original Plan
At first, The Gate was known as 1 Furnival Square. The plan was to build two towers together. One tower would be the office building. The other would be a 43 metres (141 ft) tall Jurys Inn hotel. Both towers were meant to share shops on the ground floor.
The hotel part of the project kept going even when the office tower stopped. The 11-floor Jurys Inn Sheffield hotel opened in 2010. It is right next to where The Gate is now.
Building Features and Height
When The Gate is finished, it will have 21 floors. It will stand 64 metres (210 ft) tall. This height will make it one of Sheffield's tallest buildings. It will be the sixth-tallest building in the city. The building will also have four lifts to help people move between floors.
