How The Gateway Started
The Gateway project cost $375 million to build. It was part of a big plan to improve and update parts of Salt Lake City. The first part of The Gateway was finished just before the 2002 Winter Olympics were held in Utah.
This first phase included office buildings and apartments. The old Union Pacific Depot was also fixed up and now hosts concerts.
Fun Places to Visit
The Gateway is home to several exciting attractions for families and kids. The Clark Planetarium opened in 2003, where you can learn about space. You can also catch a movie at the Megaplex 12 at The Gateway.
For younger kids, the Discovery Gateway Children's Museum opened in 2006. The offices of Salt Lake Tribune newspaper are also located here. Many special community events happen in the open areas on the north side of The Gateway.
Getting There by Train
You can easily get to The Gateway using the TRAX light-rail train. The Planetarium station opened in 2008 and is on the east side of the center. This station is in the UTA's Free Fare Zone, meaning you don't pay to ride the train in this area. The Vivint Smart Home Arena is also very close by, just across the street.
Living at The Gateway
In 2004, a tall 12-story apartment building called The Parc at The Gateway was built. It has great views of the area where the 2002 Olympic events took place. Some of the apartments in this building were quite expensive.
In 2007, a large seven-story office building was completed in the northeast part of The Gateway. This building was built for Fidelity Investments, a big company, and could hold over 1,200 employees.
Changes and New Ownership
Over time, some stores at The Gateway moved to other locations. For example, Apple Inc. moved to the newer City Creek Center in 2012. This meant that The Gateway had fewer stores and visitors for a while.
In 2016, a company called "Vestar" bought The Gateway. They planned to spend a lot of money to make it better. Vestar invested $100 million to improve the area. These changes helped make The Gateway popular again. They also worked to make the area safer.
Even with these improvements, some original stores like Abercrombie & Fitch and Abercrombie Kids closed their locations at The Gateway in 2019.
