The Grampians are a group of hills that stand tall behind the city of Nelson in New Zealand. They reach about 390 meters (1,280 feet) high.

Lots of people, both locals and visitors, love to explore the Grampians. They are covered in many walking paths, from easy strolls to challenging steep climbs.

You can enter this fun area from:

  • The top of Collingwood Street
  • The corner of Van Diemen and Trafalgar streets
  • Market Road, Bishopdale

A television and FM radio transmitter sits on top of these hills. This transmitter was built in 1971. It helps broadcast TV signals, like those from TVNZ 1, to Nelson and Tasman. This made TV reception much better than before.

Local groups and volunteers are working hard to bring back native birds to the Grampians. They do this by controlling pests that harm the birds. They work with the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary to protect the environment.

Exploring The Grampians

The main path winds its way up to the top of the hills. From here, you can see amazing views of most of Nelson. There's a special lookout near the top that gives you a wide view of the whole Nelson region. It's a great spot for photos!
