The Grange is a very old building in Wyoming, New South Wales, Australia. It used to be stables for horses but is now a home. A famous architect named John Verge designed parts of it. This special building was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means it is protected because of its history.
History of The Grange
The Grange was built in 1836. It was part of a big farm called Wyoming. This farm belonged to Frederick Augustus Hely. He was a very important person in early New South Wales. From 1825 to 1836, he was the main boss of all the convicts in the colony.
The Grange was first built as stables for horses on Hely's farm. Later, it was changed into a house. The main part of The Grange is made of sandstone blocks. It was designed by John Verge in 1832. The stone was put together without mortar, and the wood inside was cut by hand.
The building was originally very long, about 100 meters. It had four rooms and space for 7 to 10 horses. Today, only three of the original stable areas remain. People believe there might have been dungeons underneath.
The original plan of the farm still exists. It is kept at the Mitchell Library. The four rooms and the stables area of The Grange match this old plan perfectly. The whole farm was never finished. This might be because Frederick Hely died the same year building started.
Frederick Hely lived in Sydney. But he hoped to retire to Brisbane Water near Gosford. He bought a lot of land there. By 1825, he had started his farm called Wyoming. This farm was on a large piece of land, about 340 acres.
Because Hely was wealthy and important, he could hire John Verge to design his house and farm. He also chose two professional stonemasons from the convicts to help build The Grange. The building's foundation stone has the date 1836 on it. It also shows the names of the two masons, W. and A. Sidebottom.
This foundation stone is inside the building now. It was moved in 1944 when a porch was added to the north side. Harry Rolph, who owned the property then, made this change.
The name "The Grange" was given by another owner, Catherine Granger. She owned the property between 1925 and 1939. Today, the building is still used as a house. It has been changed quite a bit over the years.
Why The Grange is Important
The Grange is very important for several reasons. It is connected to Frederick Augustus Hely. He was a key figure in early New South Wales. The area of Wyoming was even named after his farm.
This building is one of the first ever built on the Central Coast. It shows how the area was settled long ago. This makes it historically and socially very special for the region.
The Grange is also important because it was designed by the famous architect John Verge. It is an early building that was built by convicts. It is actually the second oldest building on the Central Coast. Even though it has been changed, its importance has not lessened. It is a key part of the street view in Wyoming.

The Grange was officially listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register on April 2, 1999. This means it is recognized as a place of special historical value. It was also added to the former Register of the National Estate on June 22, 1993.
