History of Wyoming

How Wyoming Got Its Name

In 1824, a man named Frederick Augustus Hely bought a large piece of land here. He named it after the Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania, USA. This valley was famous because of a poem called Gertrude of Wyoming by Thomas Campbell, written in 1809.

Frederick Hely was an important person in the early days of Australia. He was the main boss for convicts. He was born in Ireland and later passed away in Sydney in 1836. He died before his house in Wyoming was finished. His tomb is near the Pacific Highway in Wyoming. It was designed by architect John Verge and has been fixed up recently.
