History of the Festival
How It Started
The very first Great British Cheese Festival happened in 2000. It was held in Oxfordshire, England. A person named Juliet Harbutt started this festival. She also created the British Cheese Awards in 1994. These awards happen before the festival each year.
The Cheese Awards
During the British Cheese Awards, food experts and farmers taste many different cheeses. They don't know which cheese is which, which is called "tasting blind." The best cheeses win special medals: bronze, silver, and gold. The winning cheeses can then show off their awards at the festival for everyone to see.
What Happens at the Festival?
At the festival, there are lots of exciting things to do. You can learn about cheese in special talks called seminars. There are also masterclasses where you can learn from experts. Sometimes, you can even watch people make cheese right in front of you!
