History of the Cheese Festival
The very first Great British Cheese Festival took place in 2000. It was held in Oxfordshire, England. A person named Juliet Harbutt started the festival.
The British Cheese Awards
Before the festival each year, there's a special event called the British Cheese Awards. Juliet Harbutt also created these awards in 1994. Food experts and farmers taste many different cheeses. They don't know which cheese is which, which is called "blind tasting." The best cheeses win bronze, silver, or gold medals! Winners can then show off their awards at the festival.
What Happens at the Festival?
The festival is a great place to learn about cheese. There are often different activities to enjoy. You might find talks about cheese, special classes, or even demonstrations on how cheese is made. It's a chance for everyone to try new cheeses and learn from experts.
Festival Locations Over Time
The festival has moved to a few different places over the years:
- In 2005, the event moved to Cheltenham in Gloucestershire.
- In 2006, there was a lot of rain, and the festival had to close on Sunday. This cost a lot of money.
- Because of the flooding, the festival went back to Oxfordshire in 2007.
- In 2008, the festival was bought by Cardiff Council. Since then, it has been held at Cardiff Castle in Wales. It took place there in 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011.
- The 2012 festival was also held at Cardiff Castle on September 22nd and 23rd.
Juliet Harbutt, who started the festival, moved back to her home country of New Zealand in 2015.
