History of the Green Shack
How It Started
The Green Shack first opened its doors in 1929. On Christmas Eve of that year, it was known as the Colorado. Before that, it had been a place called the Swanky Club.
A New Name and Look
In 1932, the restaurant got bigger. An old building that used to be a Union Pacific Railroad barracks was added. This new part was painted green. Because of this green paint, the restaurant was renamed the Green Shack.
A Historic Place
The Green Shack was recognized as a very important building. On June 3, 1994, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes places that are important to American history.
The End of an Era
Jim and Barbara McCormick owned the Green Shack when it closed. It served its last meal in May 1999. At that time, it was the oldest restaurant still open in Las Vegas. Several years later, the building was taken down.
