The Iron Woman is an exciting science fiction novel written by the British author Ted Hughes. It was published in 1993. This book is a follow-up story to his earlier and very popular novel, The Iron Man, which came out in 1968.

About The Iron Woman

This story introduces a new giant character, the Iron Woman. She arrives on Earth with a very important mission. She is upset about how humans are treating the planet. The Iron Woman wants to get revenge for all the pollution in our oceans, lakes, and rivers.

The book highlights how society often ignores the damage done to nature. It shows how many animal homes have been ruined or are close to disappearing. Ted Hughes wrote The Iron Woman to make people think about these problems. He wanted readers to understand and act on environmental issues.

Lucy Meets the Iron Woman

The main character in the story is a girl named Lucy. She discovers the Iron Woman in a terrible state. The giant is covered in harmful chemicals and looks very sad. Lucy helps to clean the Iron Woman.

Afterward, the Iron Woman shows Lucy the polluted area where she lives. Lucy feels very sorry for the Iron Woman and the animals. She watches as many animals suffer and die. This happens because a local factory keeps pouring toxic waste into the nearby marsh.

The Pollution Problem

Lucy becomes very angry about the pollution. She desperately wants to save the animals and their home. However, her own dad works at the factory that is causing the pollution. This makes the situation even harder for her.

Lucy decides to ask for help. She contacts Hogarth, who is a friend of the Iron Man from the first book. She hopes Hogarth can offer some solutions.

A Strange Transformation

The Iron Woman becomes incredibly angry about the ongoing pollution. Her rage leads her to do something extraordinary. She turns all the men working at the factory into swamp creatures. This way, they can feel the pain and suffering that the marsh animals have been going through.

The transformed men start burping black, cloudy bubbles. The very next day, these bubbles form a new, scary character: the Cloud Spider. This spider claims to be the "Spider-god of wealth." It says it catches "more and more and more money" in its web.

The Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon

Eventually, the Cloud Spider is taken away. It is carried off by the Space-Bat-Angel-Dragon. This amazing creature is also from the first novel, The Iron Man.

After this, the Iron Woman changes the men back into their human forms. But something is different. All their hair has turned white. It looks as if it has been bleached, or as if they have suddenly aged a lot. This shows the lasting impact of their experience.
