The Jester Barbarroja (El bufón Barbarroja) is a famous painting by Diego Velázquez, a well-known Spanish artist. It shows a man named Cristóbal de Castañeda y Pernia, who was nicknamed Barbarroja. He worked as a jester for Philip IV of Spain, entertaining the king and his court from 1633 to 1649. Today, you can see this painting at the Museo del Prado in Madrid. It used to be in other important places like the Palacio del Buen Retiro.
Who Was Barbarroja?
Cristóbal de Castañeda y Pernia, known as Barbarroja, was a special entertainer at the Spanish royal court. Jesters were people who made the king and queen laugh with jokes, stories, and funny acts. Barbarroja even played the role of Barbarossa in funny plays for Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Austria.
A Royal Joke Gone Wrong
Barbarroja was once sent away from the court to Seville. This happened because of a clever, but risky, joke he made to King Philip IV. The king asked him if there were olives in the town of Valsaín, which is in the Province of Segovia.
Barbarroja replied, "Sir, neither olives nor Olivares." This was a play on words, as "Olivares" sounded like "olives" and was also the last name of the powerful Duke of Olivares. The Duke was a very important person in the king's government. The Duke of Olivares did not like the joke and had Barbarroja banished.
