The Jogi's Punishment is a classic fairy tale from India. It's a Punjabi story, first written down by Major Campbell in a place called Firozpur. Later, a famous writer named Andrew Lang included this tale in his book, The Lilac Fairy Book. It's a story about justice and how good triumphs over bad.

The Story of The Jogi's Punishment

This fairy tale begins in a city ruled by a kind rajah (which means king). The rajah welcomed a holy man, a jogi, to his city. He even built a special house for the jogi to meet guests.

The Jogi's Deception

The rajah had a beautiful daughter, his only child. She was already promised to marry a prince from a nearby kingdom. One day, the princess visited the jogi. The jogi had bad intentions towards her. The princess quickly realized this and ran away. As she fled, the jogi threw a spear, wounding her leg.

The next day, the jogi told the rajah a strange story. He claimed a demon had visited him, disguised as a lovely young woman. He said this demon then turned into a scary monster. The jogi insisted that the rajah must find a beautiful young woman with a spear wound.

When the rajah found that his own daughter had the wound, the jogi lied again. He told the king that his true daughter had been replaced by an evil spirit when she was a baby. Believing the jogi's lies, the sad king had a wooden chest made. He put his daughter inside and threw the chest into the river.

The Princess's Rescue

The very next morning, the princess's betrothed prince was hunting by the river. He discovered the chest floating in the water. When he opened it, he was amazed to find his own princess inside! They recognized each other, and right there by the river, they decided to get married.

The clever prince then came up with a plan. He found a large monkey and put it inside the chest, in the princess's place. He then had the chest put back into the river.

The Jogi's Downfall

The jogi, still thinking he had tricked everyone, told his students to get the chest from the river. He ordered them not to enter his room, no matter what screams they heard. He planned to harm the "princess" inside the chest.

Soon after, the students heard loud screams for help coming from the jogi's room. They waited, following his orders. But the screams continued and grew louder. Eventually, they couldn't wait any longer and rushed into the room. Inside, they found the jogi's body. The monkey, angered by the jogi's actions, had attacked him.

When the princess heard that the jogi was gone, she felt safe. She then made peace with her father, who finally understood the jogi's evil plan. The rajah was very happy to have his true daughter back.
