Discover the Story: What's The Magic of Chocolate About?

The Magic of Chocolate tells many short stories. Each story features a character named Chocolat Aikawa. She helps people with their problems.

Chocolat owns a special chocolate shop called Chocolat Noir. This shop is hidden deep inside a forest. She sells magical chocolate treats. These chocolates can make people's wishes come true when they eat them.

However, there's a big catch! The magical chocolates come with a price. To grant a wish, Chocolat takes away what her clients value most. This means they might lose something very important to them.

Meet the Characters: Who Lives in the World of Chocolat?

Chocolat Aikawa: The Mysterious Chocolatier

  • Chocolat Aikawa (voiced by Yukana) is a chocolatier. She makes mysterious chocolate desserts. These desserts can make dreams come true when eaten.
  • She always wears a lolita fashion dress. Many customers with different wishes visit her shop, Chocolat Noir.
  • Her father, Syūga, passed away a long time ago. Chocolat received a special power. This power lets her "extract a person's mind." It was meant for her father from a chocolate devil named Cacao.
  • After gaining this power, she became the dark witch Chocolat Noir. She is very afraid of fire. This fear comes from a past event where her father's store burned down.

Cacao: The Black Cat Devil

  • Cacao (voiced by Kōki Miyata) is a chocolate devil. He was called forth by Chocolat's father, Syūga.
  • He usually takes the form of a black cat. Cacao lives with Chocolat and helps her in her shop.

Manga: The Original Comic Series

The Magic of Chocolate is a manga series. It is written and drawn by Rino Mizuho. The series has been published in Ciao and Ciao DX [ja] magazines since 2009. The chapters are released on an irregular schedule.

The individual chapters were later collected into 20 bound volumes. These volumes were published by Shogakukan under their Ciao Horror Comics label.

Instead of being numbered, each volume is named using a letter from the Roman alphabet. For example, volume 1 is "Almond Kiss." In 2013, a contest was held on Twitter to guess the subtitle for volume 10, which would start with the letter "J."

Shogakukan Asia has licensed the series. This means they publish the English version for readers in Southeast Asia.

OVA: Animated Episodes for Home Viewing

An original video animation (OVA) series was announced in 2010. OVAs are anime episodes made directly for home video, like DVDs. The episodes were given out on Ciao Ciao TV! DVD discs. These discs came with the monthly Ciao magazine.

Starting in 2018, Ciao began uploading all the episodes. You can now watch them on their official YouTube channel. There are 13 episodes in total.

Light Novels: Book Adventures

The Magic of Chocolate also has light novel adaptations. Light novels are a type of Japanese book. They often have illustrations in a manga style. Riku Hozumi wrote most of these books. Rino Mizuho, the original manga artist, drew the pictures.

These light novels are published by Shogakukan under the Shogakukan Junior Bunko imprint.

Film: Live-Action Movie Adaptation

A live-action movie based on The Magic of Chocolate was announced in January 2021. It was scheduled to be released in Japan later that year. The film stars Maho Yamaguchi as Chocolat. This was her very first movie role!

The movie was produced by Shinya Furugori and Kana Ohtsubo. Tomonobu Morikawa was the director. Tatsuya Kanazawa wrote the script for the film.

Other Cool Stuff: Fanbook and Fashion

An official fanbook for the series was released in 2013. It was called The Magic of Chocolate: H to I.

In February 2013, The Magic of Chocolate worked with a lolita fashion brand. The brand is called Baby, The Stars Shine Bright. Together, they created a special dress. The design of the dress was based on Chocolat's unique style.
