The Meadows is a very old and important house and farm located in Owings Mills, Baltimore County, Maryland. It was built a long time ago, in the 1700s, and has a unique L-shape. For about 80 years, different members of the Owings family lived here. The town of Owings Mills is actually named after this family!
The Meadows was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This means it's recognized as a special place in American history.

What is The Meadows?
The main house at The Meadows is a large, L-shaped building. It has two and a half stories and is made of stone. It was built in the 1700s, making it a very old and historic home.
The Owings Family Home
For many years, this house was home to members of the Owings family. This family was very important in the area. In fact, the town of Owings Mills got its name from them! Living here for about 80 years, the Owings family helped shape the history of this part of Maryland.
Other Buildings on the Farm
Besides the main house, The Meadows property also has several other old buildings. These buildings show what life was like on a farm many years ago.
The Slave House
One of the buildings is a two-and-a-half-story stone house. This building was historically used as a slave house. It reminds us of a difficult time in history when people were forced to work on farms.
The Stable and Tenant House
There is also an old stable on the property. It was built in the 1700s and is made of stone and timber. Stables were used to keep horses and other farm animals.
Another building is a two-story tenant house. This house is made of logs and wood siding called clapboard. A tenant house was where people who worked on the farm, but didn't own it, would live.
A National Historic Place
The Meadows was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1988. This is a list of places in the United States that are important to history. Being on this list helps protect the property so future generations can learn from it. It shows how important The Meadows is to understanding the history of Maryland and the United States.
