History of The Moorings

The Moorings was created by a developer named Francis Henry Hawkes. He bought a large property from Charles Lanier Lawrance in 1962. Francis Hawkes and his family lived there for a while.

Mr. Hawkes made many improvements to the land. He built roads, sidewalks, and a private marina for boats. He also made rules to keep the area beautiful. For example, land was sold in large pieces, and no two houses could look exactly alike.

Before Mr. Hawkes bought it, the property belonged to a famous banker named H. B. Hollins. The beautiful gardens were designed by the well-known Olmsted Brothers.

Building in The Moorings started in 1964. The name "The Moorings" comes from an old English word. It means "a place where boats can safely anchor."
