History of East Islip
East Islip was first called "East of Islip." It got its name in 1890 from the land owned by William Nicoll. He was an English aristocrat who bought the land in 1683. Nicoll bought about 51,000 acres (206 square kilometers) from the Secatogue Native Americans. His land stretched from Bayport to the east, Babylon to the west, and Ronkonkoma to the north. His large house, Islip Grange, was named after his family's home in England. It stood near the water where Heckscher State Park is today.
Old Estates and Mansions
East Islip, like many towns on Long Island's south shore, was once home to some of America's richest families. They owned large estates here. Some of these included the Hollins, Gulden, and Knapp estates.
One of the original mansions, Brookwood Hall, is now a building for the Town of Islip. It used to belong to the Thorne family. The Sullivan estate became the Hewlett School, a private boarding school that later closed.
Some of the old estate and farm lands were given to the Roman Catholic church. These lands are now part of St. Mary's of East Islip. This includes a private elementary and middle school, along with church buildings. The Westbrook farm, located between East Islip and Oakdale, is no longer a farm. Its fields are now used for East Islip Soccer and Little League games.
Modern East Islip Communities
Today, East Islip has many smaller, but still wealthy, neighborhoods. Most of these new communities were built on land that was once part of the large estates. For example, the estate of Percy G. Williams was sold off for new homes.
The Moorings is a fancy waterfront community with a guard gate. It is one of the best neighborhoods in the hamlet. Other neighborhoods in East Islip include Deer Run, Country Village, and the Beecher Estates.
