What the Story is About
The story begins during half-term holidays. Sadie's mum, who is a childminder, gets the flu. A childminder is someone who looks after other people's children while their parents are at work.
Sadie has a younger sister, Sara. Her mum also looks after three other children: Gemma, Vincent, and baby Clive. These children usually come to Sadie's house every day.
When Sadie's mum gets sick, the other parents come up with a clever plan. To help Sadie's mum rest and get better, they decide to take Sadie and the other children to their own workplaces for the rest of the week!
- On Wednesday, they visit the police station with Gemma's mum. She is a police officer!
- On Thursday, they go to an office with Vincent's parents.
- On Friday, they get to spend the day at a chocolate shop with Clive's mum.
But there's a small problem for Sadie. She also catches the flu! This means she can't return her homework diary to school. The book's chapters are named after the days of the week, showing what happens each day.
Meet the Characters
Here are the main characters you'll meet in The Mum-Minder:
Sadie
Sadie is the main character of the story. She is eight years old, almost nine. For her half-term homework, she has to keep a diary of what she does each week. This is why the book's chapters are named after the days. Sadie is very helpful. She tries her best to look after the younger children, helping her mum and the other parents.
Sara
Sara is Sadie's younger sister. She is about one year old. Sara loves to have her favourite book, Dominic the Vole, read to her.
Gemma
Gemma is one of the children Sadie's mum looks after. She is three years old. Gemma's mum is a police officer. On Wednesday, Gemma, Sadie, and the other children visit the police station.
Vincent
Vincent is another child Sadie's mum cares for. He is two years old. Vincent's parents work in an office. On Thursday, the children get to see what an office is like.
Clive
Clive is the youngest child, still a baby under one year old. Clive's mum owns a super cool chocolate shop! On Friday, the children spend the day surrounded by yummy treats.
Sadie's Mum
She is Sadie and Sara's mother and works as a childminder. She looks after Gemma, Vincent, and Clive. The story hints that Sadie and Sara don't see their dad very often, suggesting their parents might be separated.
Gemma's Mum / WPC Parsons
She is Gemma's mother and works as a police officer. Her work name is WPC Parsons. She takes the children to the police station for a day, which causes a bit of a stir with her boss!
Vincent's Mum and Dad
These are Vincent's parents. They both work in an office. They help out by taking the children to their workplace on Thursday.
Clive's Mum
She is Clive's mother. She owns and runs a chocolate shop, which sounds like a very fun place to work!
