Discovering the Museum's History
The museum is housed in a building that was once a drill hall. This hall was built way back in 1900 for the Royal Scots soldiers to train. After some updates, it reopened as the Royal Scots Museum on June 27, 1991. The Princess Royal officially opened it. Since 2006, the Royal Regiment of Scotland has also been collecting its own historical items. Today, both collections are together in this historic drill hall.
What You Can See at the Museum
The museum tells the exciting story of the Royal Scots and the Royal Regiment of Scotland. You can learn about their history from the very beginning. This includes stories from when the Royal Scots were founded by Sir John Hepburn. You can also learn about more recent events, like their campaigns in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Exhibits and Displays
You'll find many interesting things to see here. There are wall panels that explain different parts of history. You can also see dioramas, which are 3D models that show scenes from the past. Display cases hold many important objects and uniforms.
Brave Soldiers and Medals
The museum proudly displays seven Victoria Crosses. These are the highest awards for bravery in the British military. They were given to members of the Royal Scots for their incredible courage. The museum has a very large collection of medals. Only a small part of this collection is on display. However, if you ask, you can often see more of these special medals in drawers.
