Secrets Can Kill-Nancy Drew
Secrets Can Kill, the first book in the Nancy Drew Files series

The Nancy Drew Files is an exciting series of detective books. It started in 1986 and was published by Simon & Schuster. This series is a spin-off from the original Nancy Drew books. It has more adventure, mystery, and even some romance. All the books were written by authors using the name Carolyn Keene. The series was made for readers aged eleven and older. A new book came out almost every month, and 124 books were released over 11 years. More than 17 million copies of these books have been sold. They even appeared on bestseller lists like Publishers Weekly. In 2014, the books also became available as eBooks.

About the Series

The Nancy Drew Files continues the adventures of teenage detective Nancy Drew. Her father, Carson Drew, is a very good lawyer. Their home is looked after by their housekeeper, Hannah Gruen. Nancy often solves mysteries with her best friends, Bess Marvin and George Fayne. Her boyfriend, Ned Nickerson, also helps her with cases.

In the original Nancy Drew books, Nancy and Ned had a very stable relationship. But in the Nancy Drew Files, their relationship is more complicated. They sometimes break up and then get back together again throughout the series. This adds more drama to the stories.

Popular Books

Some books from the Nancy Drew Files series became very popular:

  • Secrets Can Kill (#1), Stay Tuned for Danger (#17), Death by Design (#30), and The Final Scene (#38) were all turned into fun Nancy Drew video games by Her Interactive.
  • Two Points to Murder (#8) is the first book where Nancy and Ned break up.
  • In Till Death Do Us Part (#24), Ned Nickerson asks Nancy to marry him, but she says no.
  • The Suspect Next Door (#39) led to a spin-off series called River Heights. This series was mostly about romance, but Nancy sometimes appeared in it.
  • Books from #112 (For Love or Money) to #119 (Against the Rules) had pictures from the 1995 TV show on their covers.

Television Show

A TV show called Nancy Drew was made in 1995. It was based on the Nancy Drew Files books. The show was set in modern times and had more grown-up themes. It also showed Nancy and Ned having relationship problems, just like in the books.

In the TV show, Nancy was a college student who moved to New York City. She lived with Bess, who was an advice columnist, and George, who delivered mail and made amateur films. The show was made by a Canadian company called Nelvana. It was filmed in Toronto, and some parts were even filmed in Paris.

The actors from the show, Tracy Ryan, Jhene Erwin, and Joy Tanner, appeared on the covers of the books. These were promotional pictures from the TV series. This started with book #112, For Love or Money, and continued until book #119, Against The Rules. Interestingly, For Love or Money was released in the same month that the last episode of the TV show aired. By the time the books stopped using these covers, the TV show had already been canceled for over a year.
