What is The Hub?
The Hub first opened its doors in October 2003. Before it became an arts center, the building was a large warehouse used to store seeds from 1939 to 1972. It was then used for storage until 2003.
In 2011, The Hub changed its name to The National Centre for Craft & Design. It gets support from the North Kesteven District Council and Arts Council England. The Hub is part of a group called Lincolnshire One Venues (LOV), which helps promote and fund ten different arts centers across Lincolnshire.
In May 2021, The Hub had a big makeover, costing £1.2 million. This happened after it had to close for a while because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Exciting Events at The Hub
The Hub often hosts interesting events and exhibitions. Here are a few examples:
Beach Hut Design Competition
In 2011, The Hub held a fun international competition. Architects and artists from all over the world, including North America, Europe, and Asia, sent in their ideas for designing beach huts for the Lincolnshire coast. They made small models of their designs. The winning design was then built into a full-size beach hut!
The Museum of Broken Relationships
In January 2012, The Hub became a special stop for a traveling exhibition called The Museum of Broken Relationships. This unique exhibition featured items from Croatia. Each item was a personal reminder of a past relationship, telling a story without words.
Made in the Middle Exhibition
The Hub also helped organize a big art show called Made in the Middle. This exhibition happens every three years and features modern design work. In 2012, it was shown at the mac center in Birmingham from February to April. Later, it traveled to The Hub itself, where visitors could see it from April to July 2012.
