How The Natural Confectionery Co. Started
The Early Days of Sunrise Confectioners
A long time ago, a company called Sunrise Confectioners started. It was founded by Julius Lighton and his son-in-law, Walter Eger. They bought a small candy business in Melbourne, Australia.
Later, another family member, Rudi Moser, joined them. In 1949, they bought another candy company. In 1951, all these small companies joined together to form Sunrise.
Growing Bigger and Making More Candy
By 1954, Sunrise Confectioners was very successful. They bought a larger factory in Prahran, Melbourne. This helped them make even more candy.
Over the years, Sunrise made many different kinds of sweets. These included chocolate bullets, barley sugar, and toasted marshmallows.
Family Business and New Ideas
In the 1960s, Rudi Moser worked with Walter Eger's sons, Michael and Andrew. Together, they made the company stronger. Sunrise became well-known in Australia and even in England.
In 1987, Ken Klooger, Rudi Moser's son-in-law, joined the company. In 1991, they moved their jelly candy making to a bigger place in Notting Hill.
The Birth of The Natural Confectionery Co.
In 1992, Sunrise had a new idea. They saw a trend in Europe for candies without artificial colors or flavors. So, they created The Natural Confectionery Co.
It started with a small line of products called Binka's. People really liked these new candies. By June 1997, the focus shifted to The Natural Confectionery Co. because it was so popular.
Becoming a Top Candy Brand
Thanks to good advertising and more products, sales grew a lot. By 2003, The Natural Confectionery Co. had 18 different kinds of candies. Their jelly candies became the most popular in Australian supermarkets.
In April 2003, a big company called Cadbury Schweppes bought The Natural Confectionery Co. They even started making drinks with "The Natural Beverage Company" name.
In 2008, Cadbury introduced these candies in the United Kingdom. Their funny TV ads gave the candies voices.
Focus on Sustainable Ingredients
In 2019, the Melbourne Zoo stopped selling these candies. This was because the company could not say where their palm oil came from. Making palm oil can harm the homes of endangered animals. The zoo wants companies to use palm oil that is made in a way that protects nature.
