The Pearl Button (Spanish: El botón de nácar) is a documentary film from Chile, released in 2015. It was directed by Patricio Guzmán. This film won the Silver Bear for Best Script at the 65th Berlin International Film Festival. It also received the Lumières Award for Best Documentary. The director sees this film as part of a group of three films. It follows Nostalgia for the Light and might be joined by a third film about the Andes mountains.

The movie looks at ideas like memory and history. It focuses on the stories of people who faced challenges, rather than just the winners. The film includes some of the last living members of the Alacalufe and Yaghan tribes. These are native groups from Chile. Unlike some of Guzmán's other films, this one does not only focus on Chile's past under Augusto Pinochet. The film's title comes from two things. One is a shirt button found during an investigation in 2004. This button was on a piece of rail used to weigh down bodies during Pinochet's rule. The other inspiration is a button given to a Yaghan native named Jemmy Button in 1830. He was taken aboard the ship HMS Beagle.

Exploring Chile's History

This film is like a deep thought about Chile's land and past. It uses water as a main idea, showing how it flows through the country and gives life. The movie especially looks at two groups of people who faced difficult times. These are the native people and those affected by Pinochet's government.

What the Film Shows

The film covers several interesting topics:

  • It shows the very dry northern part of Chile. This is one of the driest places on Earth. Here, huge radio telescopes help scientists learn about space every day.
  • It tells the sad story of how native tribes in the far south faced terrible challenges. Their traditional way of life was changed forever.
  • The movie shares the story of Jemmy Button. He was a native boy from Tierra del Fuego who traveled to England a long time ago.
  • It talks about how President Salvador Allende tried to help the remaining native people.
  • The film also mentions places where people were held against their will during Pinochet's time.
