The Planter's Northern Bride is a novel from 1854. It was written by Caroline Lee Hentz. This book was a response to Uncle Tom's Cabin. That famous book by Harriet Beecher Stowe came out in 1852.

What is The Planter's Northern Bride?

This book is a type of story called "anti-Tom literature." It's also known as "plantation literature." These books were written to show a different side of life in the Southern United States. They often disagreed with the ideas in Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Unlike some other books of its kind, The Planter's Northern Bride does not make a joke out of the title Uncle Tom's Cabin. For example, a book called Uncle Robin, in His Cabin in Virginia, and Tom Without One in Boston (1853) did use a similar title.

This novel also talked about abolitionism in the United States. Abolitionism was a movement to end slavery. The book suggested that groups working against slavery, like the Underground Railroad, could be tricked. It showed how people who supported slavery might use these groups for their own plans. This idea was also in an earlier book called Frank Freeman's Barber Shop (1852).

What is the story about?

The main character in the book is a young woman named Eulalia. She grew up in New England. Her father was an abolitionist. This means he believed slavery should end. Eulalia marries a plantation owner named Moreland.

At first, Eulalia shares her father's views. She doesn't like that her husband uses enslaved people on his plantation. But she soon starts to see things differently. She realizes that Moreland treats the enslaved people very well. They seem content and cared for.

As time goes on, Eulalia uncovers a secret plan. A group of local abolitionists wants to start a large slave rebellion. Their goal is to "free" the enslaved people on the plantation. They also plan to harm Moreland and Eulalia. This is despite the kindness Moreland and Eulalia have shown.

When was the book published?

Caroline Lee Hentz's novel was first published in 1854. The company that published it was T.B. Peterson Ltd.

This same publisher had released another "anti-Tom" novel two years before. That book was The Cabin and Parlor; or, Slaves and Masters. It was written by Charles Jacobs Peterson in 1852.
