The Roman Revolution (1939) is a very important book about ancient Rome. It looks at the final years of the old Roman Republic and how the powerful Roman Empire began. The book focuses on the rise of Caesar Augustus, who became the first Roman emperor.

This famous book was written by Sir Ronald Syme (1903–1989). He was a well-known expert on the Roman historian Tacitus. The book was published by the Oxford University Press. When it first came out, it caused a lot of discussion. Its main idea was that the Roman Republic and its Senate (a council of leaders) were not strong enough to rule the vast Roman lands anymore. Syme argued that Augustus simply did what was needed to bring order back to public life.

Syme used a special way to study history called prosopography. This means he studied the lives and family connections of important people. He used the work of German scholars like Friedrich Münzer and Matthias Gelzer. Syme showed how Augustus gained his great power by building strong personal relationships. He created a group of loyal supporters, sometimes called a "Caesarian" party. He then used this group to slowly defeat his opponents one by one.

This process took a long time. At first, the young Octavian (who later became Augustus) just used his connection to Julius Caesar to go after Caesar's killers. Over several years, he slowly gathered more and more personal power. Even though he claimed to be bringing back the Republic, he was actually creating a new system. Syme's book also paints a picture of Augustus as a somewhat serious and powerful leader who took control. This view has greatly influenced how historians have seen Augustus ever since.
