History of The Sagamore Hotel

The Sagamore hotel first opened its doors in 1883. Many rich people who lived in the area helped pay for it. Soon, the hotel became a popular place for wealthy visitors.

The hotel got its name from a character in a famous book. The book is called The Last of the Mohicans (1826) by James Fenimore Cooper. A "Sagamore" was a type of leader among some American Indian groups. Some other islands nearby Lake George are also named after characters from this book.

Fires and Rebuilding

The Sagamore was damaged by fire two times. The first fire happened in 1893, and the second in 1914. After the second fire, the hotel was rebuilt in early 1921. A group of investors helped pay for the new building. These investors included Dr. William G. Beckers and Dr. Willy Myers. Adolph Ochs, who owned The New York Times newspaper, was also part of this group.

They hired a skilled local architect named Robert Rheinlander. He helped make sure the hotel was built strong and beautiful again.

A Social Hotspot

For many years, The Sagamore was a very important social place. Rich tourists and people living in fancy mansions nearby would gather there. These mansions were known as "Millionaires' Row" along the western shore of Lake George.

Over time, the hotel started to get old and needed repairs. It finally closed down in 1981.

Restoration and New Ownership

In 1983, exactly one hundred years after it first opened, a builder named Norman Wolgin bought the hotel. He worked hard to fix it up and make it new again. In the same year, The Sagamore was added to the National Register of Historic Places.

Today, the resort is managed by a company called Ocean Properties. They bought The Sagamore in 2008.
