The Shops at Chestnut Hill is a shopping mall in Newton, Massachusetts. It has two floors and is located on Boylston Street (Route 9). A company called Simon Property Group manages the mall and owns most of it.

The main stores, called "anchors," are two Bloomingdale's stores. One is for women's items, and the other sells men's clothes and home goods. These are the only Bloomingdale's stores in Massachusetts!

History of the Mall

The Shops at Chestnut Hill opened in 1974. It was built on the side of a hill, so both of its two floors have ground-level entrances.

Early Stores and Changes

Before the mall fully opened, a Bloomingdale's Home Furnishings store started in 1973. The mall itself, with two floors, and a Filene's department store opened in 1974. The Filene's store moved from an older location nearby.

In 1980, the Filene's store added a third floor. The Bloomingdale's home store also added a third floor. It was changed to include a men's department. This new men's section went along with a women's Bloomingdale's store that had opened nearby in 1978.

New Management and Ownership

For many years, the mall's main structure and stores stayed the same. In 2005, a big change happened. The company that owned Filene's, May Department Stores, was bought by Federated Department Stores. Federated Department Stores also owned Bloomingdale's.

In March 2006, the Filene's store closed. The space was then renovated for most of that year. In November 2006, the Bloomingdale's Women's store moved into the old Filene's spot. This meant The Mall at Chestnut Hill now had a Bloomingdale's store at both ends!

Mall Renovations and New Additions

The mall was updated in the fall of 2006. This renovation happened at the same time the bigger Bloomingdale's opened. More chairs and sitting areas were added for shoppers. A large elevator that people with disabilities could easily use was also put in. This elevator is in the middle of the mall, near the main entrance on Route 9.

More recently, the Apple Store moved to a much larger space in the mall. It reopened on March 26, 2016, with a new Apple store design.

The first Frank Pepe Pizzeria Napoletana in Massachusetts opened here in December 2015. It's on the second floor near the main entrance. A Starbucks coffee shop, run by Simon Property Group, opened nearby in summer 2016.
