The Shops at Nanuet is a fun outdoor shopping area in Nanuet, New York. It's located where two main roads, New York State Route 59 and Middletown Road, meet. You can also get there easily from exit 14 of the New York State Thruway. This shopping center was built on the same spot where the old Nanuet Mall used to be. The Shops at Nanuet officially opened its doors in 2013. Today, some of its main stores include At Home and Stop & Shop. There is also one large empty space that used to be a Sears store.

A Look Back: The History of the Mall

The original Nanuet Mall first opened way back in 1969. It started with two big department stores: Bamberger's and Sears. Bamberger's later changed its name to Macy's.

Over the years, the mall grew and changed. In 1994, a new section was added with another large store called Abraham & Straus. This store became Stern's in 1995. When Stern's closed in 2001, a new store called Boscov's took its place in 2002. Boscov's closed in 2008 because the mall was going to be torn down.

The old Nanuet Mall was once a very big place. By 1999, it had about 120 stores and covered a huge area. However, when a much larger mall called the Palisades Center opened nearby in 1998, the Nanuet Mall started to lose many of its shoppers.

Most of the stores in the old mall, except for Macy's and Sears, closed by early 2011. That's when the owners, Simon Property Group, shared their exciting plans. They wanted to rebuild the mall into a new outdoor shopping center. This new center would have shops, restaurants, a fitness center, and a Regal Cinemas movie theater.

By January 2012, almost all the stores in the old mall had closed, and demolition began. After the old buildings were torn down, construction started on the new Shops at Nanuet. The new and improved shopping center opened on October 10, 2013. The movie theater, Regal Cinemas, opened a little later, on November 7, 2013.

Changes to Major Stores

Over the years, some of the biggest stores at The Shops at Nanuet have changed.

  • Sears: The Sears store at the mall closed its doors in January 2019. This was part of a plan to close many Sears stores across the country. Local leaders have been talking about what new stores might take over this large empty space. They hope to bring in up to three new big-name stores.
  • Macy's: On November 29, 2018, it was announced that the Macy's store would close in April 2019. A new furniture store called At Home opened in the first floor of this space in February 2021. There are plans for other new businesses to open on the second floor.
  • Fairway Market: This grocery store announced its closing on September 23, 2019. It officially closed on September 25, 2020. However, a new Stop & Shop grocery store is planning to move into this space in the summer of 2021.
  • Other Closures:
    • Zinburger, a restaurant, closed its location at the mall on June 12, 2020. This was due to financial problems caused by the COVID-19 Pandemic.
    • Sur La Table, a kitchenware store, also closed its Nanuet location in September 2020. This was part of a plan to close many of their stores.
