The Shore Road Mystery is the sixth book in the exciting original The Hardy Boys Mystery Stories series. It was published by Grosset & Dunlap. In this book, the famous detective brothers, Frank and Joe Hardy, work to stop a group of car thieves. These thieves are stealing cars from the Shore Road area.

The first version of this book was written in 1928 by Leslie McFarlane. Later, many of the early Hardy Boys books were updated. This book was rewritten in 1964 by David Grambs. This means there are two different stories with the same title!

The Shore Road Mystery Plot

This mystery story follows the adventures of Frank and Joe Hardy. They are always ready to help solve a puzzle.

Revised Edition Story

In the revised version, Frank and Joe are driving along Shore Road. They hear about a stolen car. As they chase after it, a big red truck suddenly blocks their way. The boys have to stop quickly, crashing into a fence. They are a bit shaken but not hurt. The truck driver apologizes, but Frank thinks something is strange about him.

The next morning, their friend Jack Dodd calls them. The police are looking for a car thief. They found Jack's fishing rod in one of the stolen cars. Jack says he is being framed, meaning someone is trying to make him look guilty. The police take Jack and his father to the police station. Later, the police chief tells the Hardys that the Dodds have left town. It turns out a relative of the Dodds is trying to solve an old family mystery in the Bayport area.

Original Edition Story

In the original story, Frank and Joe are riding their motorcycles with their friend Chet Morton. They meet a fisherman whose car has just been stolen. The three boys chase the thief but are delayed by an accident with a horse-drawn hay wagon.

Further down the road, they find their friend Jack Dodd and his father. The police are questioning them because a stolen car was found in their yard. Jack's fishing rod was in the back seat. Frank and Joe decide to solve the case and clear Jack's name.

While investigating, the Hardy boys look at different suspects. These include some people camping on the beach, a man named Gus Montrose, and a group of fishermen.

Frank and Joe, their father Fenton Hardy, and the police all try to find the stolen cars. Everyone is confused because the cars seem to vanish. They are not seen leaving the Shore Road area. The Hardy boys think the cars are still nearby but hidden. So, they come up with a clever plan to catch the thieves.

They buy a nice car and park it along Shore Road. They hide inside a large box in the back. The first night, the car has trouble starting, and the thief leaves it. But on the next night, the car is stolen with the boys inside! They are driven to the thieves' secret hideout. The boys are discovered, but after some exciting moments, they escape. They tell the police, who surround the area and arrest all the thieves, including Gus Montrose. All the stolen cars are found.
