What Is the Story About?
The story begins when a little mole pokes his head out of his underground home. Suddenly, something lands right on his head! It's a big, brown, smelly mess, and the mole knows it's definitely not his.
The mole is very upset and decides he needs to find out who did it. He goes on a journey to ask different animals if the mess belongs to them.
Who Did the Mole Meet?
As the mole searches for the culprit, he meets several farm animals. Each animal shows him what their poop looks like so the mole can compare.
- First, he meets a Bird.
- Then, he talks to a Horse.
- Next, he asks a Hare (a type of rabbit).
- After that, he chats with a Goat.
- He also asks a Cow.
- Finally, he talks to a Pig.
None of these animals made the mess on his head.
How Did the Mole Solve the Mystery?
The mole gets some help from two flies. Flies are very good at knowing about different kinds of animal droppings. They help the mole figure out exactly who made the mess.
The flies tell the mole that the culprit is a dog named Jean-Roger. In the English version of the book, the dog's name is Basil. He is the butcher's dog.
What Did the Mole Do Next?
Once the mole knows who is responsible, he decides to get his revenge! He quietly climbs onto the dog's head and leaves a tiny, brown surprise of his own. After that, the little mole is very happy and goes back into his hole.
