The Straits Times is a well-known newspaper from Singapore. It first started way back in 1845! This newspaper prints its stories on large sheets of paper, called a broadsheet. It is owned by a company called Singapore Press Holdings.

On August 9, 1965, Singapore became an independent country, separating from Malaysia. After this, The Straits Times focused more on news happening in Singapore. A new newspaper, called New Straits Times, was created so people in Malaysia could still get their news.

The Straits Times: A Look Back

How It Started

The newspaper began in 1845. A person named Cathick Moses started it. His friend, Martyrose Apcar, had wanted to create a local newspaper. However, Martyrose found it was too expensive. So, Cathick Moses decided to start it instead.

At first, The Straits Times was printed only once a week. Today, it is printed every single day. On Sundays, it has a special name: The Sunday Times.

Changes During World War II

During World War II, in 1942, Japan took control of Singapore. To avoid being censored by the Japanese, The Straits Times changed its name. It became The Shonan Times.

Later, when the British took Singapore back, the newspaper got its original name again. It went back to being called The Straits Times.
