How the Show Worked
Meet the Host
The show's host was John Lenahan. He dressed up to look just like Mario from the video games!
The Challenge Rules
Two players competed in each episode. Their main task was to play different Mario video games. These games included Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, and Super Mario Bros. 3.
The rounds had two main goals:
- Finish a game level as fast as possible.
- Collect the most coins on a specific level.
Winners of each round earned "gold coins." They could get one to three coins per win. The player with the most gold coins at the end of the show moved on. This meant they went to the next stage of the competition.
Sudden Death Playoff
What if both players had the same number of gold coins? Then they would play a special "sudden death" round. This was a single-level playoff. The winner of this level would then move forward in the competition.
Why the Show Ended
The show stopped airing in 1991. This was before The Children's Channel changed its name to TCC. Many viewers wrote letters asking for the show to come back. However, The Super Mario Challenge never returned to TV.
