The Sweet (sometimes called Sweet) was a very popular British band in the 1970s. They played a fun style of music called bubblegum pop and a flashy style called glam rock. The most famous members were lead singer Brian Connolly, bass player Steve Priest, guitarist Andy Scott, and drummer Mick Tucker. When they first started, the band was called Sweetshop.
The Start of Sweet
The band began in London, England, in 1968. Their first big song was "Funny Funny" in 1971. They worked with talented songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. They also teamed up with record producer Phil Wainman.
In 1971 and 1972, their music changed a lot. At first, it sounded like the Archies, which was a very light and catchy pop style. But soon, their music became more like The Who, a famous hard rock band. They also used very high-pitched backing vocals, which made their sound special.
Becoming Famous
Sweet became very successful in the UK. They had thirteen songs in the Top 20 during the 1970s. Their song "Block Buster!" was number one in 1973. After that, three more songs reached number two: "Hell Raiser" (1973), "The Ballroom Blitz" (1973), and "Teenage Rampage" (1974).
The band started to play more hard rock music. Songs like "Turn It Down" from 1974 showed this new style. "Fox on the Run" (1975) also reached number two in the UK. Sweet was even more popular in Germany and other parts of Europe.
They also had success in the United States. Their top ten hits there included "Little Willy", "The Ballroom Blitz", "Fox on the Run", and "Love is Like Oxygen".
Later Years and Legacy
Sweet had their last big international hit in 1978 with "Love Is Like Oxygen". In 1979, Brian Connolly left the band to start his own music career. The other three members continued playing together for a while. They stopped playing as a trio in 1981.
From the mid-1980s, the band members started playing music again. Andy Scott, Brian Connolly, and Steve Priest each had their own versions of Sweet. Brian Connolly passed away in 1997, and Mick Tucker passed away in 2002.
The two surviving members, Andy Scott and Steve Priest, still perform with their own bands. Andy Scott's band is based in the UK, and Steve Priest's band is based in the US.
