The Tetley is a cool place in Leeds, England, where you can see modern art. It's an art gallery located inside the old headquarters of the famous Tetley's Brewery. This special building has a unique Art Deco style. The gallery first opened its doors on Friday, November 28, 2013.

The Tetley's Story
The Tetley gallery is part of a big project to make the old Tetley Brewery site new again. The company that owned the brewery, Carlsberg-Tetley, stopped making beer there in 2011. They tore down most of the buildings, but they kept the main headquarters.
This headquarters building was saved to be used for offices. In 2013, it also became the new home for a group called Project Space Leeds. This group was a charity run by artists. When they moved into the old brewery building, they changed their name to 'The Tetley'.
The goal of The Tetley was to be like other famous art centers. These include the Cornerhouse in Manchester and the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art in Gateshead. They wanted to bring exciting new art to Leeds.
Building the Gallery
Making the old brewery building ready for art was a big job. It was managed by Pippa Hale and Kerry Harker. They were the co-directors of Project Space Leeds. Chris Walker from Esh Construction also helped a lot. Some of the money for this project came from the Arts Council England.
In January 2016, a new Creative Director joined The Tetley. Her name is Bryony Bond. She used to be a curator at the Whitworth Art Gallery in Manchester.
The Tetley art space had a lease to use the building until 2023.
The Future of the Area

There are big plans for the area around The Tetley. It's called Aire Park. This new development will be 24 acres big. It will include an 8-acre public park. This is all part of making the South Bank of Leeds a lively new place.
In March 2024, it was announced that Kirkstall Brewery would take over the building. This means new and exciting things are coming for The Tetley!
What The Tetley Does
The Tetley gallery is part of a special group called Arts Council England's National Portfolio Organisations. This means they get support to show great art to the public.
Past Exhibitions
The Tetley has hosted many interesting art shows. These shows often feature new and exciting artists.
Early Exhibitions (2013-2016)
When The Tetley first opened, it had a show called 'A New Reality'. This exhibition ran from November 29, 2013, to July 1, 2014. Many artists showed their work. They created art that responded to the history and unique spaces of the new building. Some of these artists included James Clarkson, Emma Rushton, and Yoko Ono.
Another exhibition in 2015 was called 'Painting in Time'. It explored how modern painting connects with other types of art. Artists like Natasha Kidd and Jessica Warboys were featured.
In 2016, The Tetley recreated a famous exhibition. It was by a Cypriot artist named Stass Paraskos. His original show in Leeds in 1966 was very controversial. It led to a legal case about what art could be shown publicly. The exhibition at The Tetley celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of this important moment in art history.
Also in 2016, The Tetley showed art by Jonathan Trayte. He is a sculptor from London. His exhibition, 'Polyculture', featured sculptures of vegetables and fruits. They were made from ceramic and other cool materials.
