The Troll is a fun children's story written by Julia Donaldson. It features amazing pictures by David Roberts. This book tells the tale of a grumpy troll and a group of pirates.

Story Summary

The main character is a troll who lives under a bridge. He is inspired by the troll from the famous Three Billy Goats Gruff fairy tale. However, in this story, no goats ever come to his bridge. This means the troll has to eat only fish, and he is very tired of it!

The Troll's Journey

The troll meets a spider, a mouse, and a rabbit. Each animal convinces him not to eat them. They tell him to find another bridge further down the river. They say this new bridge is much better for catching goats. The troll believes them and leaves his home.

Eventually, the troll reaches the sea. He then realizes the animals tricked him! He sees what he thinks are goat tracks in the sand. So, he decides to dig a trap for a goat. He digs a big hole near where pirates are looking for treasure.

Pirates and a Surprise

While digging, the troll finds an old chest. He throws out the "round shiny objects" inside. These are actually the pirates' treasure! He then climbs into the chest to wait for a goat. He falls asleep there.

Meanwhile, Captain Hank Chief and his pirate crew are searching for their treasure. The crew includes Peg Polkadot, Ben Buckle, and Percy Patch. They are not very good at cooking. They find the chest and take it, thinking it's their treasure.

When they open the chest, they find the sleeping troll! The pirates decide to make the troll "walk the plank." This means they will make him walk off the ship into the sea. But then, Peg finds the troll's frying pan and cookbook.

A New Cook

The pirates learn that the troll is a fantastic cook. They agree to let him live if he becomes their chef. The troll is very happy about this new job. He tells them he will make his favorite goat stew. To his horror, the pirates tell him they only want to eat fish!
