The Turrets is a very old and beautiful house in Bar Harbor, Maine. It was built in 1895 as a fancy summer home. A famous architect named Bruce Price designed it to look like a French castle. This house was one of the most amazing homes in Bar Harbor when it was a popular summer spot. Today, The Turrets is part of the College of the Atlantic. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1974 because of its important history.

Exploring The Turrets' Design

The Turrets house stands right on the shore of Frenchman Bay. It is located on the campus of the College of the Atlantic. The house is a large building made of granite stone. It has three or four stories and a very interesting roof. The roof has many parts that stick out, along with small towers called turrets and windows that pop out of the roof, called dormers.

What the Front of the House Looks Like

The front of The Turrets faces west, away from the water. It is divided into about five main sections. The middle part is four stories tall. It has a special covered entrance for cars, called a porte-cochere. This entrance is held up by fancy Ionic columns.

Above the entrance, the second floor has three windows. These windows have arched designs above them with a special symbol called a fleur-de-lis. The third floor also has three windows, separated by more Ionic columns. The very top floor has a sloped roof style called a mansard roof, with a dormer window.

Other Parts of the House

To the left of the main center section, there is a three-story part of the house. Next to it is a two-story kitchen area. Between these two parts, there is another entrance. This entrance has a stone porch, called a portico, topped with a small turret.

To the right of the main center section, there is a tall, round tower. This tower has a pointed, cone-shaped roof. Beyond this tower, there is another three-story part of the house with a rounded corner. Inside The Turrets, you can find a grand staircase and a dining room with beautiful wood panels.

The History of The Turrets

A wealthy businessman named John J. Emery from Cincinnati asked for The Turrets to be built. The house was finished in 1895. It joined many other elegant summer homes along the coast of Bar Harbor.

Sadly, a big fire in 1947 destroyed many of these beautiful summer houses. The Turrets was empty for many years after that. In the 1970s, the College of the Atlantic bought the house. Now, it is an important part of their campus.
