The Two Who Stole the Moon (Polish: O dwóch takich, co ukradli księżyc) is a Polish children's film from 1962. It is based on a popular story written by Kornel Makuszyński in 1928. This movie is special because it stars the Kaczyński twins, who later became important political leaders in Poland.
The film has been well-known to Polish children for many years. It became even more famous in the 2000s. This was because the two main child actors grew up to be very important people. One twin was Lech Kaczyński, who became the President of Poland in 2005. His identical brother, Jarosław Kaczyński, served as the Prime Minister of Poland from 2006 to 2007. The twins were only thirteen years old when they acted in the film.
Story of the Moon Thieves
The film tells the story of two twin brothers, Jacek and Placek. They are very lazy and unkind boys. All they care about is eating, and they will eat anything, even chalk and sponges at school!
One day, they get a big idea: they decide to steal the Moon. They think the Moon is made of gold, and if they steal it, they will never have to work again. They say, "If we steal the moon, we would not have to work." When reminded they don't work already, they reply, "But then we would not have to work at all!"
After some small adventures, Jacek and Placek manage to steal the Moon. But soon, a group of robbers notices the young thieves and captures them. The twins manage to escape from the robbers. One of the twins then comes up with a clever plan to enter a place called the "City of Gold."
Their plan works, and the robbers follow them into the city. However, when the robbers try to take the gold, they suddenly turn into gold themselves! The twins quickly escape from the City of Gold. They run all the way home and promise their parents they will help with the farm work from now on.
An animated version of this film was also made in 1984. It followed almost the same story. The music for the 1984 animated film was created by a popular Polish rock band called Lady Pank.
