The U.S. of Archie was a fun Saturday morning cartoon show that aired on CBS from September 1974 to September 1976. It was a spin-off from the popular Archie comic books and TV series. In this show, Archie, Jughead, and their friends from Riverdale High went on amazing adventures. They would re-enact famous moments from American history.
The show was made to celebrate the United States Bicentennial, which was the 200th birthday of the United States. Archie would often say that these historical events featured the "ancestors" of the current Archie gang. These ancestors looked almost exactly like Archie and his friends. They even seemed to be close friends with famous historical figures! The show was produced by Filmation founders Lou Scheimer and Norm Prescott.
About the Show
The U.S. of Archie was different from other Archie cartoons. It focused more on teaching history than on music and comedy. Each episode ended with a song about the historical topic that was covered. The characters were drawn a bit differently and wore new clothes for this show.
The series had 16 episodes in total. Because it was so focused on education, it didn't have as much of the music and humor that made other Archie cartoons popular. It first aired on Saturday mornings for about four months. Then, in January 1975, it moved to Sunday mornings, where it was shown in repeats until September 1976.
Music and Voices
The music for The U.S. of Archie was produced by Jackie Mills. Jackie was a Hollywood producer who also worked on music for other shows. The main singer for the show's songs was Tom McKenzie. Tom was also part of a singing group called the Doodletown Pipers.
The characters in the show were brought to life by talented voice actors:
- Dallas McKennon voiced Archie Andrews, Hot Dog, Mr. Weatherbee, and Chuck Clayton.
- John Erwin voiced Reggie Mantle.
- Jane Webb voiced Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, and Miss Grundy.
- Howard Morris voiced Jughead Jones and Big Moose Mason.
